Cynanchum auriculatum Royle ex Wight (CA) is experiencing challenges with continuous cropping obstacle (CCO) due to soil-borne fungal pathogens. The leaf litter from CA is regularly incorporated into the soil after root harvesting, but the impact of this practice on pathogen outbreaks remains uncertain. In this study, a fungal strain D1, identified as Fusarium solani, was isolated and confirmed as a potential factor in CCO. Both leave extract (LE) and root extract (RE) were found to inhibit seed germination and the activities of plant defense-related enzymes. The combinations of extracts and D1 exacerbated these negative effects. Beyond promoting the proliferation of D1 in soil, the extracts also enhanced the hypha weight, spore number, and spore germination rate of D1. Compared to RE, LE exhibited a greater degree of promotion in the activities of pathogenesis-related enzymes in D1. Additionally, caffeic acid and ferulic acid were identified as potential active compounds. LE, particularly in combination with D1, induced a shift in the composition of fungal communities rather than bacterial communities. These findings indicate that the water extract of leaf litter stimulated the growth and proliferation of fungal strain D1, thereby augmenting its pathogenicity towards CA and ultimately contributing to the CCO process.

Background: A retrospective case-control study to determine the role of pre-operative systemic and local nutritional factors on patients developing a surgical site infection (SSI) after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). Surgical site infection after PLIF remains a substantial cause of morbidity. The literature demonstrates the prognosis of surgical patients is associated with pre-operative nutritional status that not only includes systemic nutritional factors, such as prognostic nutritional index (PNI), body mass index (BMI), and serum albumin, but also local nutritional factors, such as subcutaneous fat thickness at the surgical site, including absolute fat thickness and relative fat thickness. However, the role of pre-operative nutrition status in SSI after PLIF surgery remains unclear. Patients and Method: A retrospective review was performed on a consecutive cohort of 766 consecutive adult patients who underwent PLIF surgery for lumbar degenerative conditions between 2020 and 2021 at Second Xiangya Hospital. Previously identified risk factors as well as systemic and local nutritional factors nutritional factors were collected. Results: Among the 766 patients, 38 had post-operative SSI including 15 superficial SSI and 23 deep SSI. Univariable analysis showed that body weight, BMI, PNI, serum albumin, and relative fat thickness differed between the SSI and non-SSI groups. Multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that pre-operative PNI and relative fat thickness were independently associated with SSI after PLIF surgery. Conclusions: Lower pre-operative PNI and higher relative fat thickness are independent risk factors for developing deep SSI after PLIF.

Diet plays a crucial role in regulating individuals' lifestyles and is closely related to health. The intake of animal-sourced foods (ASF) provides the human body with high-quality protein and various micronutrients. This study aimed to investigate whether the diversity of animal foods has a positive impact on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among residents. The data came from the Shaanxi baseline survey of the Northwest Chinese Regional Ethnic Cohort Study, which recruited more than 100 thousand participants aged 35 to 74 from five provinces between June 2018 and May 2019. A total of 39,997 participants in Shaanxi (mean age: 50 years; 64% women) were finally included in this current study. The animal source food diet diversity score (ASFDDS) was established based on the frequency of consuming pork, mutton, beef, poultry, seafood, eggs, pure milk, and yogurt. The physical component score (PCS) and mental component score (MCS), ranging from 0 to 100 on the 12-Item Short Form Survey (SF-12), were used to assess participants' HRQoL. Better PCS/MCS was defined as scores higher than the 90th percentile. The results showed that men had a higher intake of ASF and ASFDDS than women. After adjusting for potential confounders, compared with those who never or rarely consumed animal foods, the likelihood of having better PCS and MCS increased by 16% (OR = 1.16, 95%CI: 1.01-1.34) and 24% (OR = 1.24, 95%CI: 1.03-1.448), respectively, in men with an ASFDDS ≥ 2. In women, a 34% increase (OR = l.34, 95%CI: 116-l.54) likelihood for better PCS was observed for an ASFDDS ≥ 2, but no association was observed for MCS. Increasing each specific animal source's food intake was associated with better PCS after adjusting for all covariates. However, for MCS, positive associations were only observed in seafood consumption among men and eggs among women. Restricted cubic splines showed a substantial dose-response association between intake frequency of animal-source foods and PCS, both in men and women. The study suggests that a diverse intake of animal-sourced foods can potentially improve the HRQoL of Chinese adults.

Objective: We aimed to report the surgical outcomes of serial cases and retrospectively analyze the value of partial vertebrectomy and spinal shortening in the reduction of old spondyloptosis at the thoracolumbar spine. Methods: From 2015 to 2021, eight cases of patients who received a spinal intervention of partial vertebrectomy and spinal shortening for thoracolumbar spondyloptosis over 3 weeks post-trauma were retrospectively summarized. Medical records and surgical outcomes were extracted for clinical safety and efficacy evaluation. Results: Acceptable reduction and immediate stabilization were achieved for all eight cases without causing iatrogenic damage to the viscera. The mean operation time was 3.7 h (range, 3.2-4.2 h) with a mean blood loss average of 1,081 ml (range, 900-1,300 ml). Postoperative stay in the spine department was an average of 11.4 days (range, 8-17 days), followed by an early rehab program. The mean visual analog scale (VAS) for low back pain decreased from 8.0 preoperatively to 1.4 at the last follow-up. The average follow-up period was 19.9 months. As for neurological function recovery, six patients with preoperative ASIA-A status remained unchanged throughout the follow-up period and improvement of one ASIA grade was noted in two patients. At the latest follow-up, sound interbody fusion as well as good alignment of the spinal column were confirmed radiologically in seven patients, while one patient encountered slight re-dislocation 3 months after surgery, but eventually achieved spinal fusion. Conclusion: Partial vertebrectomy and spine shortening via a posterior approach showed good efficacy and safety in the management of old spondyloptosis of the thoracolumbar spine, allowing for a one-step good reduction and spinal fusion for early rehabilitation.

Konjac glucomannan (KGM) has been reported to prevent high-fat diet-induced obesity, and we study investigated whether dietary supplementation with KGM can prevent obesity by increasing energy expenditure in inguinal white adipose tissue (iWAT) of high-fat diet (HF) -fed mice. Weaned mice fed the control diet (Con), HF, or HF plus KGM (8%, w/w, HFK) were divided into three groups. The results showed that 10-week supplementation with KGM significantly reduced partial adipose tissue weight and body weight, and improved glucose tolerance. Compared to the HF group, plasma lipid concentrations in the HFK group were greatly decreased to the control level. Moreover, transcriptomic research has shown that genes that are mainly associated with energy and lipid metabolism are significantly altered in iWAT. Mechanistically, KGM stimulated thermogenesis by promoting the expression of uncoupling protein-1 (UCP1) and the ß3-adrenergic receptor (ADR3ß). Taken together, our results suggest that dietary supplementation with konjac glucomannan can effectively alleviate obesity induced by a high-fat diet by activating ADR3ß-mediated iWAT thermogenesis. Dietary supplementation with KGM can effectively alleviate high fat diet- induced obesity mice by via activating ADR3ß-mediated thermogenesis of iWAT.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the association between maternity formula supplementation and small for gestational age (SGA) status in Chinese newborns. METHODS: Data were from a population-based cross-sectional survey conducted in Shaanxi, Northwest China between August and December 2013. A total of 27 780 women pregnant with singletons and 356 with twins were included in this survey. Information on use of maternity formulas fortified with vitamins, folic acid, pantothenic acid, calcium, iron, zinc, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was collected. SGA was defined as birthweight <10th percentile of fetal growth. Generalized linear models and estimating equation models were used to estimate crude odds ratios (ORs) or adjusted ORs with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for SGA. RESULTS: The rate of maternity formula supplementation during the entire pregnancy was 13.0% in the overall population. There was no significant association between maternal formula supplementation during pregnancy and the risk of total SGA birth (OR: 1.00; 95% CI, 0.90-1.11; P = 0.950). However, maternity formula supplementation during pregnancy was related to a lower risk of SGA for twins (OR: 0.49; 95% CI, 0.31-0.80; P = 0.004), twin A (OR: 0.50; 95% CI, 0.25-0.98; P = 0.045), and twin B (OR: 0.48; 95% CI, 0.25-0.95; P = 0.034). Furthermore, maternity formula supplementation during the first trimester was inversely associated with the risk of SGA birth of twins (OR: 0.32; 95% CI, 0.15-0.65; P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: No significant association was observed between maternity formula supplementation and total SGA birth. However, women supplemented with maternal formula during pregnancy, especially during the first trimester, may have a reduced risk of SGA birth of twins.

BACKGROUND: Unreasonable use of antibiotics and probiotics can alter the gut ecology, leading to antibiotic resistance and suboptimal health outcomes during early life. Our study aims are to clarify the association among antibiotic and probiotic exposure in early life, the microecology of the gut microbiota, and the development of antibiotic resistance; to investigate the long-term impact of antibiotics and probiotics on the health outcomes of infants and young children; and to provide a theoretical basis for the rational use of antibiotics and probiotics from a life course perspective. METHODS: The study is a prospective, longitudinal birth cohort study conducted in Shaanxi Province, China from 2018 to 2024. A total of 3,000 eligible mother-child pairs will be enrolled from rural, suburban, and urban areas. The recruitment of the participants begins at pregnancy, and the newborns will be followed up for 2 years at successive timepoints: within 3 days after birth, 42 days after birth, and at 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months of age. Sociodemographic data, environmental exposures, dietary patterns, psychological conditions, and medical and drug histories are collected. Cognitive and behavioural development among infants and young children and questionnaires on antibiotic knowledge and behaviour among caregivers will be collected at 12 and 24 months of age. The faecal samples are collected and analysed by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and quantitative PCR (qPCR) for antibiotic resistance genes. DISCUSSION: The findings will inform antibiotic and probiotic use for pregnant women and infants and contribute to establishing rational use strategies of antibiotics and probiotics for paediatricians, health practitioners, and drug administration policy-makers. The yeast mannoproteins (MPs), a major component of yeast cell walls with large exploration potentiality, have been attracting increasing attention due to their beneficial effects. However, the information about the anti-obesogenic activity of MPs is still limited. Thus, the effects of MPs on the high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and dysbiosis of gut microbiota were investigated in this work. The results showed that MPs could significantly attenuate the HFD-induced higher body weight, fat accumulation, liver steatosis, and damage. Simultaneously, the inflammation in HFD-induced mice was also ameliorated by MPs. The pyrosequencing analysis showed that intervention by MPs could lead to an obvious change in the structure of gut microbiota. Furthermore, the prevention of obesity by MPs is highly linked to the promotion of Parabacteroides distasonis (increased from 0.39 ± 0.12% to 2.10 ± 0.20%) and inhibition of Lactobacillus (decreased from 19.99 ± 3.94% to 2.68 ± 0.77%). Moreover, the increased level of acetate (increased from 3.28 ± 0.22 mmol/g to 7.84 ± 0.96 mmol/g) and activation of G protein-coupled receptors (GPRs) by MPs may also contribute to the prevention of obesity. Thus, our preliminary findings revealed that MPs from yeast could be explored as potential prebiotics to modulate the gut microbiota and prevent HFD-induced obesity.

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the efficacy of teriparatide versus zoledronate on spinal fusion in osteoporotic patients after posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF). METHODS: Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis undergoing PLIF for degenerative spondylolisthesis were randomly assigned to receive either zoledronate or teriparatide. During the 2-year follow-up period, serial radiographs were used to determine fusion status and instrumentation-related sequelae (a composite of adjacent vertebral compressive fracture, instrumentation failure, and fusion failure). The bone mineral density (BMD) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) were also serially measured. RESULTS: Of the 77 patients, 36 were in the teriparatide group and 41 in the zoledronate group and had completed the 2-year follow-up assessments. Bony union had been achieved more frequently in the teriparatide group than in the zoledronate group at 6 months postoperatively (P < 0.05), although the overall rate of bone union was comparable between the 2 groups. The incidence of instrumentation-related sequelae was also comparable between the 2 groups (teriparatide vs. zoledronate group, 13.9% vs. 22.0%). Regarding antiosteoporosis, the BMD values had significantly improved in both groups at the last follow-up. The teriparatide group had attained more BMD increments at 12 months postoperatively than had the zoledronate group. Furthermore, the ODI had consistently decreased in both groups with a lower ODI in the teriparatide group than in the zoledronate group at 12 months postoperatively. CONCLUSIONS: Among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, teriparatide showed superior bone union at 6 months and greater BMD improvement at 12 months after PLIF compared with zoledronate administration, although both resulted in similar overall effects on spinal fusion.

This study aims to explore whether selenium (Se) concentration correlates with arseniasis in a high-arsenic coal area in the southern Shaanxi Province, China. Herein, an epidemiological investigation was conducted among 100 arsenic (As)-poisoned patients in Ziyang County, an area with high soil As and Se levels. Fifty healthy subjects were selected from areas without endemic As poisoning. The subjects in the high-As coal area were diagnosed with either normal, suspicious, mild, moderate, or severe As poisoning. Local coal, water, soil, corn, and pepper samples, as well as hair, blood, and urine samples of subjects and patients were collected and analyzed for their As and Se contents. The contents of As and Se in coal, soil, corn, pepper, and hair samples from Ziyang County were significantly higher than those in the control area. The As content of hair in Ziyang County positively correlated with As poisoning, whereas the Se content of hair and urine negatively correlated with As poisoning. The Se content in the body was negatively correlated with the degree of As poisoning, indicating that Se may accelerate the metabolism and decumulation of As and antagonize As toxicity.

Background: This study aimed at investigating the association of sleep duration with body mass index (BMI) by gender among adult residents in rural Hanzhong of Shaanxi province, Northwest China. Methods: A two-level stratified random cluster sampling method was used to select adult residents between the ages of 18 and 80 years. All information including sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyles was collected by face-to-face interview with a structured questionnaire. According to standard methods, trained staff were responsible for anthropometric measurements using calibrated instruments in an empty room. By gender, both ordinary least square regression (OLS) and quantile regression (QR) were used to analyze the relationship between sleep time and BMI controlling for other confounders. The restricted cubic splines with five knots were further used to express the potentially non-linear association between sleep time and BMI. Results: A total of 3,017 eligible participants were included in the study. After controlling for confounding factors including sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyles, OLS regression did not indicate any significant association of sleep duration with BMI among men and women. Among men, it was clear that there is an inverse U-shaped relationship between sleep time and BMI beyond the 66.0th percentile (BMI ≥24). Among women, quantile regression presented a significant U-shaped relationship between BMI and sleep duration. According to the restricted cubic splines, the women who sleep for approximately 9 h had the lowest BMI, and when sleep duration approached approximately 7 h among men, their BMI would be the highest. Conclusions: The U-shaped and inverse U-shaped relationships between sleep duration and BMI were clearly observed for women and men, respectively, in our study. The identification of potentially relevant modifiable risk factors may provide better preventive approaches to obesity.

The effects of zinc, copper, and selenium on human congenital heart defects (CHDs) remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the associations of the maternal total, dietary, and supplemental intakes of zinc, copper, and selenium during pregnancy with CHDs. A hospital-based case-control study was performed, including 474 cases and 948 controls in Northwest China. Eligible participants waiting for delivery were interviewed to report their diets and characteristics in pregnancy. Mixed logistic regression was adopted to examine associations and interactions between maternal intakes and CHDs. Higher total intakes of zinc, selenium, zinc to copper ratio, and selenium to copper ratio during pregnancy were associated with lower risks of total CHDs and the subtypes, and the tests for trend were significant (all p < 0.05). The significantly inverse associations with CHDs were also observed for dietary intakes of zinc, selenium, zinc to copper ratio, selenium to copper ratio, and zinc and selenium supplements use during pregnancy and in the first trimester. Moreover, high zinc and high selenium, even with low or high copper, showed a significantly reduced risk of total CHDs. Efforts to promote zinc and selenium intakes during pregnancy need to be strengthened to reduce the incidence of CHDs in the Chinese population.

This study aimed to derive a maternal dietary pattern to explain the variation in B vitamins during pregnancy and to investigate this pattern in relation to birth outcomes. A total of 7347 women who gave birth to live newborns less than one year were included. Their dietary pattern during pregnancy was derived using the reduced-rank regression method with six B vitamins as response variables. Associations between dietary pattern score and birth weight, gestational age at delivery, birth weight Z score, low birth weight, preterm, and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) were estimated using generalised linear mixed models. We identified a high B-vitamin dietary pattern characterised by high intakes of animal foods, vegetables, fungi and algae, legumes, and low intakes of oils and cereals. Women in the highest quartile of this pattern score had newborns with a 44.5 g (95% CI: 13.8, 75.2 g) higher birth weight, 0.101 (95% CI: 0.029, 0.172) higher birth weight Z score, and 27.2% (OR: 0.728; 95% CI: 0.582, 0.910) lower risk of SGA than those in the lowest quartile. Our study suggested that adherence to the high B-vitamin dietary pattern during pregnancy was associated with a higher birth weight and a lower risk of SGA.

Birth weight and related outcomes have profound influences on life cycle health, but the effect of maternal hemoglobin concentration during pregnancy on birth weight is still unclear. This study aims to reveal the associations between maternal hemoglobin concentrations in different trimesters of pregnancy and neonatal birth weight, LBW, and SGA. This was a prospective study based on a cluster-randomized controlled trial conducted from July 2015 to December 2019 in rural areas of Northwest China. Information on maternal socio-demographic status, health-related factors, antenatal visits, and neonatal birth outcomes were collected. A total of 3748 women and their babies were included in the final analysis. A total of 65.1% and 46.3% of the participants had anemia or hemoglobin ≥ 130 g/L during pregnancy. In the third trimester, maternal hemoglobin concentration was associated with birth weight in an inverted U-shaped curve and with the risks of LBW and SGA in extended U-shaped curves. The relatively higher birth weight and lower risks for LBW and SGA were observed when hemoglobin concentration was 100-110 g/L. When maternal hemoglobin was <70 g/L or >130 g/L, the neonatal birth weight was more than 100 g lower than that when the maternal hemoglobin was 100 g/L. In conclusion, both low and high hemoglobin concentrations in the third trimester could be adverse to fetal weight growth and increase the risks of LBW and SGA, respectively. In addition to severe anemia, maternal hemoglobin >130 g/L in the third trimester should be paid great attention to in the practice of maternal and child health care.

A field experiment was carried out in mudflats adjacent to the Yellow Sea, China, amended with sewage sludge and vermicompost by one-time input at different rates to reveal the fates of tetracycline resistance genes (TRGs) and their potential hosts in the soils. Quantitative PCR results showed that soils added with either sludge or vermicompost had more abundant TRGs compared with the non-fertilized soil. This situation was more obvious in sludge fertilized soils especially at high application rates. Vermicompost exhibited a promising outlook for improvement of the mudflats. The abundances of intI1 in the non-fertilized soils were significantly higher than those in fertilizers and fertilized soils. The potential hosts for intI1 were not shared with other TRGs-contained hosts, indicating that intI1 had little effects on the dissemination of TRGs in the mudflats. Moreover, the exclusive hosts for TRGs in fertilizers were not higher than those in the non-fertilized soils, illustrating little effects of fertilization on the introduction of exogenous TRGs into soil. The shared hosts between soil and fertilizers were highest among four possible sources, contributing vastly to the bloom of TRGs following fertilization. It was also shown that different organic fertilizers caused distinct categories of shared potential hosts for TRGs. RDA analysis further indicated that the abundances of the shared potential hosts were affected by soil nutrients. These results suggested that the development of TRGs in soil following fertilization depended on the shared potential hosts with similar ecological niches between soil and fertilizers.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight is closely related to infant survival and future health, growth and development. In developing countries, the incidence of low birth weight is twice as high as in developed countries. Due to the low economic and medical level in northwest China, the problem of low birth weight needs to be solved urgently. METHODS: We developed the predictive model based on data sets from a cross-sectional study conducted in northwest China, and data were collected from August 2013 to November 2013. A total of 27,233 patients were included in the study. Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used to select the optimal predictive characteristics among risk factors. The selected characteristics in the LASSO regression were used in multivariate logistic regression to build the prediction model. C-index and calibration plot were used to evaluate the degree of discrimination and calibration of the model. The decision curve is used to evaluate the net benefit rate of the application of the predictive tool. Bootstrapping validation was used for internal validation. RESULTS: Nomogram included gestational age, the sex of the attendance, the mother's education level, antenatal care, the mother's occupation, pregnancy-induced hypertension, family income, exposure to pesticides and nutritional supplements. The C-index of the predicted nomogram was 0.698(95% confidence interval: 0.671-0.725), C-index of internal verification was 0.694, indicating that the model had a good identification ability. Calibration plot showed that the model had good calibration. Decision curve indicated that patients with a threshold probability of low birth weight between 1% and 71% would benefit more from using the prediction tool. CONCLUSION: The use of this predictive model will contribute to clinicians and pregnant women to make personalized predictions easily and quickly so that early lifestyle detection and medical intervention can be undertaken by physicians and patients.
